Beginners' Guide to Vitamin - The ABCs of Skincare

by Larissa Tsui

Vitamins are micronutrients that keep us functioning properly and support skin and hair health. Vitamins travel through our bloodstream and to all our different body parts. So, by the time it reaches our most outer layer - the skin - its efficacy is reduced. This is why including vitamins in our skincare products and applying them topically should be sought after too! It's an efficient way to target specific areas and concerns. It's not uncommon to get confused between all the different types so, let's run over what some of the most common vitamin ingredients in our skincare help us with 💊

Vitamin A

In skincare, vitamin A, or retinoids as you may know it as, is the ultimate anti-aging ingredient. It stimulates collagen production which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It boosts cell turnover, as it advances the shedding of old skin and stimulates the generation of newer, healthier skin. This helps to fade hyperpigmentation, even out skin texture and even minimises enlarged pores. Vitamin A allows our skin to look plumper, firmer and younger too!

BELLEZA COREANA

An “A-mazing” night cream for vitamin A beginners! Formulated with retinol, it has all the benefits I mentioned above that are delivered as you sleep. Though vitamin A has many beneficial properties, it can be harsh for some. It’s amazing that this cream also contains bakuchiol too! Studies show that bakuchiol has the same benefits as retinol, without the irritation. The combination of bakuchiol and retinol also makes this cream less irritating. But to be super careful, we would recommend slowly integrating it into your skincare routine. Start by using it 2-3 times a week and build up slowly. As retinoids can increase sun sensitivity, we would recommend to use it only at night time and don’t forget to apply sunscreen! Also note that vitamin A is not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding so it should be avoided by baby moms'.

Vitamin B3

Known as niacinamide, vitamin B3 helps stressed-out skin and boosts skin recovery with its wide range of benefits. Niacinamide rescues our skin by regulating oil production, reducing inflammation and inhibiting melanin production. As you can see, it’s a multitasking ingredient that can help with all skin types! Brighten, acne-fighting, and reducing the appearance of pores and fine lines are just some more of the benefits. It’s truly an ingredient that can be incorporated into any skincare routine yet helpful for all skin concerns.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5, or panthenol, as we often see in skincare hydrates and nourishes the skin to keep skin healthy. Panthenol has the benefit of acting as both a humectant and an emollient. Humectants attract and bind water to the skin and penetrate deeper layers of the skin. While emollients create a protective barrier that helps lock in hydration and prevent water loss. Along with its great hydrating benefits, panthenol also has anti-inflammatory properties and aid in wound healing. This makes panthenol good for soothing irritated skin and conditions such as eczema, rosacea and as an acne treatment too.
