Predicting 2022's Skincare Ingredient Trends

by Michelle Li

What a year 2021 has been! It’s even crazier that we are nearing the end of the first month of 2022 already 😅 As far as skincare goes, 2021 was the year of skin-soothing ingredients to help out our skin from maskne. Centella, mugwort, and heartleaf are just a few that fell into 2021’s trending skincare ingredients 🍃 These ingredients are known for their ability to soothe, protect and strengthen our skin which was needed from the common problem of wearing masks, which unfortunately for a lot of us, resulted in us having to deal with face mask-induced acne. Thankfully, many brands came out with products containing these skincare ingredients which definitely saved our skin.

So with 2021 over, what does 2022 bring us? Skincare brands are already coming out with new products with exciting ingredients that help us achieve better skin. We thought we would talk about a few that we predict will be the rising skincare ingredient of 2022 that there’s already buzz surrounding it.

Trending Skincare Ingredient #01 - Prickly Pear Seed Oil

With so many antioxidant ingredients out there, it’s hard to pick just one. To make my top choice, there had definitely been a lot of talk on beauty blogs at the start of the year about the prickly pear seed oil 🍐 The prickly pear seed oil actually is extracted from the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. This oil contains the highest amount of Vitamin E available in any beauty oil. This is a potent antioxidative so it’s an effective nutrient that the skin needs to protect itself from oxidative stress. The prickly pear seed oil also has vitamin K in it which helps the skin generate collagen. This is especially important to have as we age as our skin naturally loses its ability to produce collagen.  Along with vitamin E and vitamin K, the skin is able to be more plump and smooth while fighting again the signs of aging like collagen damage, dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles.

For those seeking a product containing the prickly pear seed oil, the Huxley Oil Essence; Essence-Like, Oil-Like may just do the trick.  Though it is an oil-based essence, it quickly absorbs into the skin. This unique formula can trap in moisture to prevent your skin from feeling dry while giving the skin plenty of antioxidants and anti-aging care with just a drop of this product.

Trending Skincare Ingredient #02 - Probiotics

Because face masks from last year (continuing this year as well, unfortunately) resulted a lot of damaged and weakened skin, improving our skin barrier is starting one of the top skincare trends in early 2022. And having probiotics in your skincare products is one of the ways to achieve this! Even though other products can help our skin out, we should be prioritizing strengthening our skin’s microbiome to improve our skin barrier. By doing this, our skin can counteract skin concerns like acne, dryness, and premature aging. Probiotics can restore our skin’s microbiome as they support our skin’s healthy bacteria to keep the bad ones off. Probiotics also assist in boosting the skin’s production of ceramides to trap our skin’s moisture levels meaning our skin has a better ability to keep hydration and moisture in the skin. We may have over-exfoliated as part of the process to prevent maskne in 2021, so let 2022 be the way to restore our skin’s health through skin barrier strengthening.

The Neogen Real Ferment Micro Serum contains two probiotic ingredients, Bifida Ferment Lysate and Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate. These ingredients can help our skin’s microbiome be more resilient to bacteria to protect our skin and keep it healthy and strong. As these ingredients are retrieved through a fermentation process, this product contains various vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that our skin needs for our skin barrier to function correctly. During the fermentation process, the molecules break down into smaller structures which means our skin is more inclined to easily absorb the nutrients too. Because of the probiotics found in this serum, it can boost our skin’s immune system to protect and strengthen the skin's barrier.

Trending Skincare Ingredient #03 - Peptides

With collagen continuously being a top skincare ingredient for anti-aging in all years, for those looking for alternative it won’t be a surprise that peptides will be found after. Peptides are important in skincare as they help our skin produce collagen. Collagen is one of the most important proteins that your skin needs for it to look plump and firm 💪 However, with age, sun damage, stress, and other external factors mean your skin starts to lose collagen and its elasticity and firmness. Peptides can signal to your skin to repair itself and boost collagen production which strengthens our skin barrier as well as plump and firm up the skin. Because peptides strengthen our skin barrier, our skin elasticity can prove while reducing any skin inflammation we may come across.

The Pyunkang Yul Intensive Repair Cream is an anti-aging cream that contains peptides to benefit our skin from fine lines and wrinkles while boosting our skin barrier through ceramides. Because of this, our skin can hydrate itself and prevent moisture loss. Another way to strengthen our skin barrier and heal our skin.
