Product Features
Close to a decade after releasing the award-winning Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop, in May this year, Klairs released the Freshly Charged Vitamin Serum. You may be thinking, aren’t they both vitamin C serums? What’s the difference?
The main difference is the Vitamin Drop contains 5% pure vitamin C, while the Charging Serum contains 10% vitamin C derivative. I only recently found this out, but pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is not tolerated on all skin types due to its low pH. Vitamin C derivatives on the other hand, are more stable, easily absorbed and better suited to those with sensitive skin.
The Charging Serum also contains Niacinamide (vitamin B3 derivative), which helps build keratin, a protein that maintains your skin health, making your skin brighter, stronger and smoother. Other key ingredients include tocopherol (vitamin E), centella asiatica extract and panthenol (vitamin B5 derivative). Together, these powerful antioxidants and active ingredients work to brighten skin and reduce blemishes and the appearance of fine lines.
Personal Experience
My first experience using vitamin C in skincare was years ago, and being a big fan of many Klairs products, I had used the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop. Unfortunately, my skin didn’t tolerate it well at all, and I pretty much gave up on vitamin C, thinking it wasn’t something I could use on my sensitive skin. From reviewing the Goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Cream recently, I was surprised my skin was so happy, and even thrived with it, that I went down a rabbit hole researching vitamin C derivatives. That was when I found out about the differences I mentioned above. I was excited to give Klairs’ new serum a go to see if I’ve found another vitamin C derivative product that works for my sensitive skin.
My first impression of the serum was that it is light, absorbs easily and isn’t sticky. It’s not an oily texture either like the Vitamin Drop is, and there’s no noticeable scent or smell. The pump makes it easy and hygienic to use, and I like the sleek bottle it comes in. I used it day and night and a couple of weeks in, while my skin hadn’t reacted negatively to the vitamin C derivative, I also didn’t see any obvious results either. But I was also really sick during this time (these winter bugs have been so intense!), so I think my skin was busy just trying to survive rather than trying to *glow*.
After two weeks however, I started to notice a difference, my skin was looking brighter and smoother. I felt more comfortable heading out with just some blush and lip tint as my skin was looking pretty good. I haven’t noticed much in the area of fine lines, but I have noticed an improvement in the overall look and feel of my skin.
Klairs is a brand that simply does effective but gentle products so well! If you are tossing up between the Vitamin Drop and this Charging Serum, this is probably a safer choice if you have sensitive skin. My skin definitely loved it more and I prefer the texture of it too. So if you’re looking to incorporate a vitamin C serum, I would definitely recommend giving this serum a go.
