K-Drama Recs For the Long Weekend 😌

by Michelle Li

Long weekend ahead and I’m staying in to catch up on the recent K-series airings. I’ve got all the genres for you - heart-racing survival, coming-of-age, and of course, gotta thrown in a classic drama romance 🫶 Scroll ahead for my current watchlist...

#1 Culinary Class Wars

Netflix | Culinary Class Wars

THE Netflix show of the season, Culinary Class Wars is yet another K-series that has become a global phenomenon. We rarely see Korean chefs get the representation they deserve, but in this show, we’ve got 100 chefs to show off - 100 down to just one winner?!

Essentially, there are 80 ‘Black Spoon’ chefs that are still unknown by the majority of Koreans, thus they go by their self-named nicknames. The other 20 chefs? They’re ‘White Spoon’ chefs who have won countless competitions, become judges, and some with a Michelin star under their belt.

Every episode is a competition to decide who will be the next top chef in Korea - will a ‘no-named’ Black Spoon come out on top, or a ‘White Spoon’ chef will prove their worth once again? 🤔

#2 Family By Choice

VIU | Family By Choice

Based on the Chinese drama, Go Ahead, Family By Choice revolves around three children who have all grown up together… they just aren’t blood-related.

San-ha (Hwang In-youp) and Hae-joon (Bae Hyun-sung) were both abandoned by their mothers during childhood. But with Joo-won (Jung Chae-yeon) and her father’s support, they grew up with a lot of love. If you didn’t watch the K-drama all the way through, you would think they are actually siblings.

It’s until their abandoned parents come into their life again, that these relationships may deteriorate, leaving us with the question ‘is family really a choice?’ So far, this K-drama has become a top watch! The chemistry between the main characters – just elite 👏🏻

#3 What Comes After Love

VIKI | What Comes After Love

…and for those we are always up for a romance, What Comes After Love needs to be added to your watch-list. It reminds me a lot of 2000s’ classic romance movies, leaving you balled up with all sorts of emotions.

After feeling so stuck in Korea, Hong (Lee Se Young) travels to Japan for a breath of fresh air. It’s here where she meets Jungo (Sakaguchi Kentaro) and they very quickly fall in love. But with different aspirations, cultural backgrounds, love languages, this love drifts and they break up.

5 years later, unlike their past, Hong and Jungo have both created successful careers. Jungo, now a bestselling author, has arrived in Korea to launch his new book. At the airport, they meet just like how fate brought them together in their first encounter. What will be this K-drama’s take on ‘what comes after love?’
