Skincare Mistakes to Avoid in the Summer
With the sun out and the warmer temperature, we can feel the summer season coming up very soon. But as always, we should look after our skin and make changes when necessary. Especially because the sun and UV rays are a culprit of many skin problems! While we should make the utmost effort to take care of our skin, there are a few things that we should be wary of during summer.
Over-Exfoliating
Exfoliating is important all year round whether that’s physically or chemically. It helps to remove dead skin cells as well as unclog pores as it’s able to increase cell turnover for a smooth and glowier complexion. It can be tempting to over-exfoliate during warm seasons as our pores may look enlarged and there’s an increase in breakouts from the heat. However, this can irritate the skin by causing redness and more breakouts. This is because a lot of exfoliators contain acids which can even lead to burning and increased sensitivities of other products applied onto the skin.

A more gentle approach if you feel the need to add an additional exfoliating step to your skincare routine is peeling gels. Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel is a good option that contains “betaine salicylate.” This is a form of BHA derived from the sugar beet plant meaning it’s a lot gentler on the skin. Not only is this a gentle formula, as this product is a peeling gel it doesn’t cause us to physically scrub our face. Instead, it’s able to break down dead skin cells just by lightly massaging the product onto our skin.
Avoiding Brightening Ingredients
Because Vitamin C is known to be vulnerable to direct sunlight, some may think applying Vitamin C products in summer will do bad for the skin. Some friends around me even have their brightening serums locked away in summer to use them only in wintertime! Avoiding using brightening agents in summer is a big mistake. In fact, using Vitamin C underneath and in combination with sunscreen means that you are giving your skin a huge antioxidant boost! So, keep the brightening care coming during all seasons!
The Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Drop contains 5% vitamin C as its main ingredient so it’s great for those wanting to try out vitamin C. This percentage of vitamin C is ideal to get your skin used to this ingredient to decrease irritation. Its formula keeps your skin moisturised before and after being out in the sun while also containing soothing ingredients like centella asiatica extract. Just remember to avoid using vitamin C with other acids to prevent irritation 😊
Neglecting After Care
When out in the sun we should aim to keep our skin soothed, calmed and hydrated to reduce sun damage. It is also important to protect our skin even after we have been exposed to the sun because the free radicals from the sun’s UV rays can cause damage to the skin even hours after we have been exposed to it. This means our skin can be more prone to breakouts, premature aging, and losing its natural ability to heal itself.
The I'm From Mugwort Essence is made up of 100% mugwort extract so our skin can reap in the benefits of this skin-calming ingredient. Using soothing ingredients like mugwort extract can help heal the skin after exposure to the sun. This ingredient is extracted from a plant meaning it has plenty of antioxidants to protect the skin from free radicals that damage our skin. Even though this damage may not be visible, the negative side effects can show up in the long run especially, if we aren’t caring for our skin before and after constantly out in the sun.
Applying Sunscreen only ONCE
Sunscreen is a must all year around but we should be even more cautious about it during summer. It is important to apply sunscreen no matter what you are doing as a preventative measure to protect your skin. You may start the day by applying sunscreen, but even with the highest level of SPF reapplying sunscreen every 4 hours is a must to make sure that our skin is constantly shielded from the sun to prevent sun damage. Sunscreen does wear off especially if we are sweating or in the water and being more active in the heat.
The Kahi UV Aqua Balm makes it handy to reapply sunscreen during the day to protect our skin. It comes in a stick form so it’s easy to take with you for reapplication. It doesn’t rub off other skincare products or makeup once applied due to its unique formula. With an SPF of 50+, this sunscreen stick can strongly protect the skin against 98% of UV rays. It also contains antioxidants and soothing ingredients like turmeric root extract and licorice root extract to further protect our skin from UV rays.
Taking care of our skin is important all year round however, sun damage can easily happen during the summer. Using appropriate products to combat this and being more careful can lead to better skin.
Let’s all have fun this summer!
Until next time,
