Sea Buckthorn, The Vitamin All-Rounder

by Michelle Li

When it comes to brightening ingredients, what comes to mind may be Vitamin C but there are plenty of other brightening ingredients that are more suitable for various skin types. We understand that Vitamin C can be irritant and cause sensitivity to some skin types and some of us avoid it for this exact reason. But for those who do have a skin concern of hyperpigmentation yet are vitamin C sensitive, looking for alternative brightening agents is the answer. Lucky for us, there are a few ingredients that have all the brightening properties we are looking for and more while being non-irritating. To start, we thought we would talk about the ingredient, Sea Buckthorn.

Sea buckthorn or you may see it as Hippophae Rhamnoides in ingredient lists is a flowering plant that produces berries. These berries are what’s commonly used in skincare as they have various vitamins like E, K, and of course, C. In fact, the Sea Buckthorn fruit is one of the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C and has the third-highest source of vitamin E among plants. It contains plenty of other vitamins, fatty acids, and amino acids which provide the skin antioxidants to protect the skin from free radicals and promote cell regeneration. This in turn makes it a great anti-aging ingredient too.

So with the various benefits that sea buckthorn has, you may be hesitant to try it in case of skin sensitivity. But not to worry, sea buckthorn is an ingredient that actually soothes, calms as well as hydrates the skin, and won’t irritate sensitive skin types. Even though sea buckthorn contains a high amount of vitamin C, it is less likely to lead to irritation due to having fatty acids like omega-3 to balance out the skin. Due to the anti-inflammatory properties that fatty acids contain, it soothes irritation and strengthens your skin barrier.

This cream is made of 75% sea buckthorn water to help give your skin moisture without making the cream feel heavy on the skin. Even though it is light, it can still give even dry skin the moisture it needs. Suitable for all skin types, this cream's high amount of sea buckthorn extract means it also has plenty of vitamin E, a great one to incorporate with vitamin C. These two vitamins are both antioxidants but when they are combined the brightening effect increases. This is because vitamin C is an ingredient that is easily oxidised however, vitamin E helps stabilise it which helps achieve better results especially if you are looking to brighten hyperpigmentation. So if you are using a vitamin C serum, this cream may just help increase brightening effectiveness.

So with sea buckthorn being a versatile skincare ingredient for all skin types, it could be one that you would like to incorporate into your daily skincare routine. Not only is it an antioxidant and provides brightening capabilities but it is commonly found in replacement of water due to its ability to both hydrate and moisturise the skin. So if you would like to try a new ingredient out, sea buckthorn extract could be your next one!
