Skincare Musts to Stop Maskne

by Michelle Li

Auckland has slowly been decreasing restrictions however, that doesn’t mean we should stop wearing masks. Instead, we should do our best to protect ourselves but with that, a lot of us have been suffering from ‘Maskne’, acne caused by regularly wearing masks, and sometimes this can also be irritations caused by face masks too.

Maskne happens as our pores are more prone to clogging up with dead skin cells, oil and dirt especially if we aren’t taking care of our skin to counteract this. The reason behind this happening is because the mask blocks our pores and traps these skin impurities, thus causing pores to clog up which can lead to blackheads and whiteheads forming. As we wear face masks every day, these clogged pores can become infected with bacteria. Unfortunately, the combination of this causes our skin to break out. We even may experience our skin producing more oil under this mask to compensate for the dryness our skin feels from the mask which could also be why we are breaking out. There have been many of us who have encountered these problems and as frustrating as it can be we hope these tips will help you combat maskne to achieve the clear skin that we ought to have.

1. Strengthen Skin Barrier

Strengthening your skin barrier is important to prevent maskne in the first place. A strong skin barrier prevents bad bacteria from penetrating into the skin and interfering with the clogged pores which results in the occurrence of maskne. It also helps our skin not lose our natural hydration and moisture levels which are another way to stop breakouts from happening as masks tend to dry our skin out.

An ingredient to help keep our skin barrier healthy is ceramides. Ceramides help create a barrier that not only prevents bad bacteria from entering the skin but locks in moisture to prevent breakouts and dryness. The Pyunkang Yul Calming Moisture Barrier Cream is a lightweight cream that contains ceramides to reinforce our skin barrier while keeping our skin at a high moisture level. This cream also contains tea tree leaf extract and centella to help treat our maskne while hydrating our skin to further strengthen our skin.

2. Chemical Exfoliator

With clogged pores becoming more prominent when wearing masks, it’s important to prevent and reduce this by exfoliating 2-3 times a week. Chemical exfoliators can generally be gentler than physical exfoliators as you aren’t manually scrubbing your skin which can be better especially as our skin can slightly become more sensitive after wearing masks regularly.

The COSRX Two in One Poreless Power Liquid uses willow bark water, a form of BHA as the main source of chemical exfoliant to break down and unclog pores. Using a chemical exfoliator like this one means that it will not only be able to break down dead skin cells to leave our skin smooth and plump but can unclog pores to prevent breakouts and uneven skin texture.

3. Soothe

Maskne can also cause irritation and redness due to the friction between our skin and the mask itself. Using soothing ingredients can be beneficial to help heal the skin and prevent further irritation. Ingredients that have high anti-inflammatory properties will be extremely helpful to keep it remaining calm and clear.

The Benton Deep Green Tea Toner is a suitable product to use to soothe skin that is sensitive or irritated from wearing masks all day. This toner contains a high level of anti-inflammatory properties with ingredients like centella and houttuynia cordata extract. This means these ingredients have the ability to soothe and heal the skin to help lessen the redness and breakouts caused by maskne. Plus, the green tea extract in this toner can restore the skin’s natural oil and moisture levels which may be disturbed due to wearing masks often.

4. Lighter Makeup

Lastly, wearing lighter makeup can be really beneficial to reducing maskne from happening. Wearing heavy makeup doesn’t allow for our skin to breathe which is already made difficult when wearing masks, thus, dead skin cells and other impurities are more inclined to clog our pores. Unfortunately, the bacteria from the masks and environment in addition to this leads to the formation of maskne. So, keeping makeup light and simple is one of the easiest and best ways to prevent maskne from forming.

Staying safe is a priority and that means wearing masks whenever we are out and about. But our skin has for sure been sacrificed 🥺 Thankfully, we have skincare to safe us! These tips are hopefully some ways that can help us fight maskne so we can achieve clear skin once again.

Hope everyone is staying safe this season!

Until next time, thanks for reading.

Bye Beauties 🐰💕!
