Serums for Combination Skin

by Michelle Li

Having combination skin means the t-zone is more oily which causes enlarged pores, blackheads, or even acne to occur. Whereas the other areas like the cheeks are dry and dull. With what seems to be contrasting skin types, it can be hard to combat skin concerns especially because each area of the face is so different. This makes it tricky to find just one product that can help with all the different skin concerns of ours. So, to help our Beauties with this skin type out, we thought we would give you our recommendations on serums that would work best for combination skin.

Serums can be crucial to a skincare routine especially if you have a specific skin concern. This is because they have a higher concentration of ingredients than the majority of other skincare routine steps. This means it can target specific skin concerns more effectively with specific ingredients it majors in.

Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol

With combination skin, you need to search for one serum that can not only help balance the oilier t-zone area but also to heal flaking skin at the same time. Hurray for the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum has the ability to do both! With its main ingredient as Green Tea Water, it balances out the skin's sebum production while still giving hydration and moisture to the dry patches on the skin. This serum contains 76.49% Green Tea Leaf Water which is the ingredient to look for effectively reducing sebum production. This ingredient also contains plenty of antioxidants to protect the skin which is especially important if the skin is acne-prone to prevent breakouts. If you do have combination acne-prone skin, using this BoJ serum could be super helpful with not just antioxidants but with heaps of other sensitive skin protecting goods such as mugwort, centella, and propolis.

So, Green Tea is great for your oily forehead and chin. But what’s there for your dry cheeks? Panthenol found in this serum is both an emollient and a humectant, which means it can replenish the skin’s need for water as well as keep it within the skin = both moisturising AND hydrating! This serum also contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid to ensure that the drier parts of your skin is kept well hydrated to prevent them from becoming flaky and dull.

Some By Mi AHA 10% Amino Peeling Ampoule

When it comes to combination skin, blackheads, enlarged pores and breakouts could be a common skin concern.  Chemical exfoliant may be just what is needed to combat this. But we also understand that this might irritate the dry parts of the skin. So, here’s an ampoule that can effectively remove excess sebum but is gentle enough to remove dead skin cells without sensitising the skin. The Some By Mi ampoule contains both AHA and PHA to thoroughly remove dead skin cells. This means skin looks less dull and instead, is bright and smooth. For the oily t-zone area, that’s where BHA and LHA come in. These chemical exfoliants help to penetrate deeper into the skin which removes oil and impurities that are clogging up the pores leaving the appearance of pores smaller with less blackheads.

For an ampoule like this, where different forms of chemical exfoliants are found, using it in different areas of the face at different times could be better suited for combination skin. For the drier areas of the skin like the cheeks, using the ampoule once a week will mildly exfoliate dead skin cells. For the t-zone area where the skin is more oily, the ampoule can be applied 2-3 times a week to better remove the excess sebum.

iUnik Rose Galactomyces Synergy Serum

If you are looking to brighten your skin up and minimize pore size, you may just want to try this iUnik serum out. This serum contains 50% Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, a type of yeast that’s able to control oil and sebum making it ideal for the oily t-zone area. What does this mean for our skin? A decrease in the appearance of pores and less blackheads, perfect for the oily areas of the skin.

With dry skin, it can tend to look dull due to water-loss. This serum is able to brighten it up while giving the skin hydration through the ingredient, Rose Centifolia Flower Water. Both a moisturizing ingredient that can also deeply hydrate the skin while strengthening the skin barrier means no water escapes leaving the skin feeling soft, supple, and more plump.

We understand the struggle that combination skin types may have when choosing skin care products as there seems to be opposing skin types. But finding products that have ingredients that can combat both oiliness and dryness is key. This will balance out the skin’s natural oil and water level to keep it in control. We hope that this helped our Beauties who have combination skin get started!

Thanks for reading!

Until next time, bye Beauties 🐰💕
