Have You Made Your Winter Skincare Change-Up?
When the cool air of fall starts blowing in, you might notice changes in your skin. Your skin could start feeling dry, tight, and even start breaking out as the temperature drops. Humidity level in the air becomes lower and the dry air robs the skin of its moisture, leaving it feeling tight and uncomfortable. To make matters worse, we turn on the heaters to battle the cold. But the hot and dry air is only going to suck out more moisture causing our skin to dry out 😞

Depending on your skin type, you might experience something slightly different! Constant rain where the temperature is cool combined with high humidity can cause the skin to feel both greasy and dry at the same time. This is because the lower temperatures dehydrate our skin and the humidity congests our pores. This can cause our skin’s natural moisturizing factors (NMF), the substances in our skin’s upper layers keeping it protected and well-hydrated, become out of balance. When our skin’s NMF is out of balance, not only is the moisture-balance off but the barrier functions can be undermined too and result in skin sensitivity. These conditions are especially troubling for those with dry skin, eczema, psoriasis or acne and can aggravate them even more.

The days have grown cooler, but the coldest season is still ahead of us. Though we cannot change climate change, it doesn’t mean our skin has to suffer through it. Everyone’s skin is different, so unfortunately, there’s no one solution that can work for us all. But, what you can do is adjust your skincare routine to protect your skin from the seasonal changes. So, here is how you can combat these effects caused by season and weather changes.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Opt for a gentler facial cleanser during winter to prevent harsh chemicals from drying out your skin further. The Klairs Gentle Black Facial Cleanser is a creamy, dense cleanser that is soft and mild while gently removing all impurities in the skin with a hydrating finish. It also has a low pH level to help balance and strengthen the skin barrier to prevent skin sensitivity.
Make Hydration Priority
Give your skin the hydration it needs with a hydrating serum. Hyaluronic acid is great for hydration because it is a humectant meaning it attracts water to keep skin soft and supple. Numbuzin’s No.6 Deep Sleep Mask Serum improves dehydration to solve rough and dry skin. This serum is made with 63% Iceland Glacier Water and different sizes of molecules of Hyaluronic Acid to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin to provide deeper hydration.
Shift to Heavy-Duty Moisturisers

For oily-skin, this may mean switching from gel-textures to lotions and for dry skin, try a thicker cream. This will salvage the lost moisture caused by the cool temperature. Look for products that contain emollients as they prevent water loss by providing a protective layer to lock in moisture, protect it from the environment, and strengthen the skin barrier. Illiyoon’s Ceramide Ato line is my recommendation for drier days! It contains a type of emollient, ceramides to lock in intense moisture, soothe sensitive skin and strengthen the skin barrier. Now skin feels soft and moisturised even in winter! For oily skin, opt for the Ceramide Ato Soothing Gel, a gel-lotion hybrid meaning it has a non-sticky finish while still giving you long-lasting hydration. For dry skin, try the Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream. This has a much richer cream texture for an intense moisturising effect to keep skin feeling nourished and hydrated throughout the day/night.
When the weather fluctuates, our skin is bound to fluctuate with it. For those of us in New Zealand, it’s especially hard where the weather is cold and dry one day, and warm the next. Even though you may have your holy grails and a skincare routine that you have curated to be compatible with your skin, it may not be exactly what your skin needs all year round. So making just skincare routine adjustments accordingly to the weather is important to consider. Hope I’ve helped you out! Thanks for reading 🥰
