The suburbs that have got us talking! From trendy new hotspots to serene, hidden gems, these areas are quickly becoming the places to be. Better tune in - you’ll want to know about them!

Kingsland

Denizen - Urbanaut - NZ Herald

Centered around all things local, Kingsland is brimming with small independent shops and eclectic eateries that gives it a charming, homely vibe. With iconic spots like Urbanaut Brewing Co, 14oz Jeans Outlet Store and Atomic Coffee Roasters + the proximity to Eden Park, it’s always buzzing with lively sport supporters and music lovers.

But the food scene here? It’s seriously underrated! In fact, it rivals Mt Eden (I’m aware this is very high praise!). Packed into a tight-knit strip with everything from Jamaican at Nanny’s Eatery to Japanese at Taiko and good ol’ Kiwi pub vibes at The Portland Public House. Plus, it’s just a quick trip into the city, making it perfect for a weekend binge.

Newmarket

NZ Herald

Looking to shake up your week with something fun after work? Or maybe a first date spot with enough energy to keep things flowing (ahem, disguise the awkwardness…)? Newmarket is where it’s at! Always ahead of the curve, it’s home to Westfield and flagship stores - David Jones and LEGO store

Whether you’re after high-end fashion, unique homeware or boutiques, this is the place for you. Think household names like Juliette Hogan, Zoe & Morgan, Deadly Ponies, Ruby and Kowtow, plus the newly relocated Checks Downtown - you’ll find something for everyone across Teed, Osborne, York and Kent Street.

After a day of shopping, unwind with drinks and food at Westfield’s Rooftop Precinct, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city.

Point Chevalier

Locallista

Perched on its own little peninsula, Point Chevalier (Pt Chev) is known for its beach, scenic walks and next-level pastries. If you’re an early bird, kick off your day with a stroll through Coyle Park for a coastal scenic walk. Afterward, hit up nearby, Pt Chev Beach Cafe for breakie! Then, pop by the Little French Cafe - this hole in the wall gem overflows with displays of flaky tarts, pies and dreamy croissants that sell super quick with queues out the door.

And let’s not forget Gourmet Wok - arguably, the best fish and chippie in Auckland! Crispy and golden, picture sinking your teeth into that. In March, Pt Chev comes alive with Big Gay Out - a queer extravaganza filled with music, markets and a dance party! Plus, you’re just a hop, skip and a jump away from Auckland Zoo and MOTAT, so you can round your day with wholesome fun.

Mt Eden (Maungawhau)

Newsroom

Nestled in the heart of Auckland, Mt Eden is home to the famous stadium, Eden Park and an endless array of Asian eateries stretching along 7.3km of Dominion Road - Mt Eden has always been THAT suburb.

Start your day with a quick 10-minute hike up Mt Eden for 360 o breathtaking views of the city - as Auckland’s highest natural point, towering 196 metres above sea level. Oh, and keep an eye out for Luke Combs coming to Eden Park early next year!

In Mt Eden, you’re just steps away from the best hot pot, BBQ, dumplings and bubble tea. If you struggle to make a choice, here are our must try places:

Eden Noodles  - slurp happily through a comforting bowl of dumplings, wontons, noodles, rice and sides! You must try their dry mixed quail eggs, it goes perfectly with any dish.

Circus Circus  - Brunch out at a circus themed cafe where the main event is their delicious breakfast dishes! Grab a slice of banoffee pie too.

Maya Hot Pot  - Round up your mates for a soupy, savoury feast! This place never disappoints.

Mt Albert

Finally getting the recognition it deserves… Mt Albert , once a hidden gem, is starting to gain some buzz. The food scene is fantastic, the walks are scenic and the community spirit is stronger than ever (shoutout to the Mt Albert community Facebook group!). Start your day with an iconic pie from Muzza’s or brunch at the trendy L’Oeuf. Then, head to the summit of Ōwairaka , an easy 20 minute walk for sweeping views of the city.

After, when you’re parched and need a sweet pick me up, head to Wild Wheat for a coffee and cinnamon bun before diving into the town centre for a taste of the local food scene. For dinner or lunch, you’re spoiled for choice! Choose from so many delicious places, Ruang Thong (still a favourite even after it’s days at Mercury Plaza 😥), Broke Boy Taco for the most mouth-watering birria tacos and one of the two BBQ Noodle House for some slightly naughty Chinese food with portions so generous, you’ll have leftovers at least another meal and a half!

Keep an eye out for these up-and-coming suburbs! Whether you’re looking to fill your day or looking for the next place to call home - these hidden (and not so hidden) gems are waiting to be explored.
