Let’s be real: life’s too short for average meals. If you’re on the hunt for your next favourite bite, consider this your cheat sheet to eating well and claiming your spot as the friend with the best taste.

Dear Diary,

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what really sets a great food spot apart from a good one.

It’s not just about what’s on your plate - obviously that's key - but it's that feeling when you’re leaving the place that makes you think, “wow, I really enjoyed that.” When the whole experience just clicks; the interior, service, drinks and small details fit together perfectly. I’ve found the top contenders that hit the mark, and it would be cruel not to share.

Approved finds of a certified big back:

Fifty Fourth Street

📍 54 Waimarie Street, St Heliers

If you’re looking for a spot that’s a true neighbourhood gem, Fifty Fourth Street is the place to be. You’ll almost want to keep this to yourself - tucked away in the quiet residential areas of St Heliers, it’s a small modern space with a lot of heart! It’s clear the lovely owners (two sisters!) have poured their love into every nook and cranny, from pretty decor and aesthetic interiors to the tasty pastries and drinks.

Personal Rec:

🥐 The custard croissant is a must! Light, flaky and generously filled, to the brim with the creamiest vanilla bean custard - if you’re a custard lover like me, you’ll know this isn’t the store bought kind.

🍰 If that's not your vibe, my sister, the burnt basque cheesecake connoisseur (she’s tried them internationally) swears this is the best she’s ever had. Go see for yourself…

Hotpot Duke

📍 660 Dominion Road, Mount Eden

I’ll admit, I’ve done my fair share of hotpots and I wasn’t expecting to be wowed - but from the moment I set foot in their newly revamped space, Hotpot Duke completely changed my mind. The space felt clean and chic, sporting a new layout that just works. However, the service was the real star of the show - FREE gel manicures? Need a hair tie? Mouthwash? You name it, they’ve got it!

Personal Rec:

🍧 Don’t sleep on their dessert menu! Leave room for dessert or risk getting some major FOMO - while I'm a firm believer that Biscoff is overrated, their salted caramel biscoff shaved ice is exactly what you need after all that heat and spice. The salted caramel cuts through any signs of richness and most importantly - it's cold.

Leafe Cafe

📍 Level 2/277 Broadway, Newmarket

Returning to Leafe Cafe, I was hesitant… would it live up to my memories? It had been a while since my last visit but returning here was like a warm hug from a good friend after a long week - which was exactly what I needed. The layout is private, but not suffocating, the service is swift but friendly, and the food was still as beautiful as ever.

Personal Rec:

☕️ Kumara latte - don’t knock it till you try it. It’s been a while since I last had it, but I still think about it to this day. It’s smooth, velvety, and not too rich, but just enough to be comforting.

🥯 I tried their grilled halloumi bagel with sunflower pesto which was delicious and super filling, but I prefer my bagels extra toasty (you could probably request this).

Non Solo Pizza

📍 259 Parnell Road, Parnell

If you’re itching for a holiday but your bank balance won’t allow for it, Non Solo Pizza is the place to go. Stepping into this restaurant felt like being transported to a mini escape in Italy. Interior? Stunning. Warm, cosy and intimate; perfect for a date night with a special someone. Outside? Beautiful. Fresh, lively and luxe; perfect for dinner and drinks with friends.

Personal Rec:

🥔 Looking for love? The duck fat roast potatoes are where it’s at. Golden and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside and a touch of rosemary - no need to compensate with extra salt or sauce. I’m salivating thinking about them right now… unforgettable!

What makes a good food spot isn’t just about the dishes - it's the atmosphere, thoughtful touches and impeccable vibes that make you want to come back again and again. Whether you’re after a cute catch up spot, next-level service or special celebration, these places turn a meal into an experience and make you feel extra special.

Stay hungry, Beauties x
